A quirky romantic comedy about a relationship between two lonely people with different outlooks on life

This film could easily have been Napoleon Dynamite goes Antipodean, and in many ways the awkward humour pays it great tribute, but the film itself offers much more. Behind the laughs is a deeply human story, a bittersweet tale of family, loss, and self discovery that has much in common with Zach Braff’s sleeper hit Garden State.

At times this contrast can leave the tone of the film feeling a little muddled, and this isn’t helped by the seemingly pointless animation interludes which feel a lot like filler added to bulk out the slender running time. While beautifully shotIndieNational Forum and making great use of the built-in scenery, there are times when Cohen’s goal outstretches his reach and as such a few scenes noticeably drag.

However, it is rare for people so unremarkable to be invested with such life and it is a credit to the whole cast - Horsley's performance in particular is a standout - that the story feels so natural and real. While rough around the edges, Cohen captures these awkward people with a humanity that makes you care, making it much greater than the sum of its confused parts.
