Clown on Queen Street by Amy Davies
I found a clown, but failed to find wool in Cardiff city centre

Newly MADE: Day 1

Newly Made follows Amy Davies as she learns to craft

The last time I picked up a ball of wool with any intention of making something with it, I was probably around ten years old. I made a pom pom using two rings of cardboard cut out from a cereal box. It was lovely, but it served no purpose. It didn’t keep me warm and it was too round to sit anywhere looking pretty, but it did make good ammunition to throw at my brother.

"It did get me wondering whether there might be a downturn in wool sales" These days, less inclined to throw things and finding myself working on a crafting magazine, I thought I might as well try my hand at crafting. Crocheting looked a bit easier than knitting and I thought making rows of wool into a scarf would be fairly achievable, so I chose this as my first project.

My first task on this mission was to find some wool. I felt pretty confident that I’d be able to find some quite quickly, which was weird considering I’d never bought any wool before. However, my grand ambitions were dashed after walking around Cardiff for an hour with no success.

I tried lots of different crafty-looking shops, but most of them only sold material, sewing stuff, embroidery equipment and papercraft. It did get me wondering whether there might be a downturn in wool sales, or if it wasn’t quite trendy enough for city centres anymore.

My first day is a bust and I’m resigned to trying to find some wool in my local area tomorrow. Hopefully I’ll have more luck.
